Do QR codes expire? Why some stop working and how to avoid it

Updated 4 min read

Written for business owners, event organisers and hosts who want to know whether an existing QR code will stop working or how to make a permanent one

Short answer

A QR code pattern printed on paper or saved as an image never expires on its own. When a QR code suddenly shows a 'Campaign paused' or 'Subscription expired' screen, it is because the generator encoded a dynamic short-link on its own server instead of your actual link, and turned off the redirect after a free trial. A true static QR code encodes your destination URL, Wi-Fi network or vCard text directly in the squares, so it works for as long as your own webpage or Wi-Fi password exists.

Every week, thousands of restaurant owners, wedding planners and small businesses print menus, flyers or business cards, verify that the QR code works on day one, and then wake up two weeks later to angry messages that scanning the card shows “This QR code has been deactivated” unless they pay $12 to $35 a month.

Nothing inside the printed ink wore out. A QR code defined by ISO/IEC 18004 is simply a two-dimensional way of writing text in black and white squares, no different from printing words in Helvetica. What expired was a middleman redirect server that the generator slipped between your printed square and your real destination.

Why static QR codes never expire (and how dynamic ones fail)

Every QR code on earth falls into one of two setups depending on what text is encoded inside the squares:

Static QR code (never expires) Phone Camera Scan Direct: https://yoursite.com/menu (or Wi-Fi / vCard) Dynamic QR code (expires if vendor stops redirecting) Camera Scan qr-trck.example/x8K2 (Paywall) Your real page
A static QR code writes your own URL or data directly into the squares; a dynamic code points at someone else's short-link domain.

Can the QR generator shut it off?Impossible. The generator is not involved after you download the SVG or PNG.Yes. If your trial ends, your card fails or the company closes, every scan breaks.

How to test whether a QR code you already made will expire

Before you send artwork to a print shop for 1,000 packaging boxes or event badges, take twenty seconds to inspect what is actually inside the code:

  1. Point your iPhone Camera (without tapping the yellow banner yet) or Android Camera at the QR code on your screen.
  2. Read the exact domain name displayed inside the preview pill before opening the link.
  3. If the preview pill shows your own domain name (or Offers to Join Wi-Fi or Add Contact directly), it is a static QR code and no QR vendor can ever expire it.
  4. If the preview pill shows an unfamiliar short domain (such as qrco.de, qr.io, me-qr.com, bit.ly or another redirect host) that you do not own, it is a dynamic QR code that depends on that third party staying free and online.

Note that security agencies, including the FBI IC3 advisory on QR codes, also recommend checking the preview domain before tapping any public QR code, so using your real, recognisable domain makes customers far more willing to tap your code in the first place.

The 4 real reasons a static QR code stops working

Even when you generate a clean static QR code in our free in-browser QR code generator, four real-world changes outside the QR code can still break it later:

  1. You deleted or renamed the webpage: if your code encodes https://cafe.example/autumn-2026-menu.pdf and you upload winter-2027-menu.pdf at a new URL next season, the old printed tent cards will hit a 404 Not Found page. Always encode a timeless path like https://cafe.example/menu instead.
  2. Your domain registration or SSL certificate lapsed: if you let your custom domain expire or break HTTPS, browsers will refuse to load the link inside the code.
  3. You changed your Wi-Fi password or SSID: a Wi-Fi QR code stores the exact SSID and password characters. Rotating the guest Wi-Fi password means printing a fresh card.
  4. Physical sun fade or abrasion: thermal receipt paper turns black or fades in sunlight within months, and unlaminated outdoor stickers scratch. Use UV-resistant ink or matte lamination for outdoor signs, and set error correction to Q (25%) or H (30%) so the code still scans if up to a quarter of the surface is scuffed.

How to get “editable” QR codes for free without a dynamic QR subscription

The single legitimate selling point of paid dynamic QR services is changing where a printed flyer goes next month. If you already have any website, WordPress, Shopify, Astro, Cloudflare Pages, Netlify, Squarespace or a company server, you already have that feature for free:

  • Create a short, dedicated path on your own website, such as https://yoursite.com/card or https://yoursite.com/promo.
  • Point that path to today’s destination page (or set up a one-line 301 redirect in your site’s _redirects or .htaccess file).
  • Paste https://yoursite.com/promo into our static QR code generator and export the vector SVG.

Your printed code is tiny, scans fast, costs $0 forever, leaks zero customer data to a QR middleman, and remains 100% editable whenever you update that redirect on your own domain.

Questions

Do static QR codes ever expire?

No. In a static QR code, the characters of your URL, Wi-Fi password, phone number or vCard sit directly inside the black-and-white pattern. There is no vendor server in the middle that can pause or bill for scans.

Why did my free QR code stop working after two weeks?

Many search-engine ads for 'free QR code generator' quietly create a dynamic QR code tied to a 7-day or 14-day trial. Instead of encoding your website, the code points to the vendor’s tracking domain, which displays a paywall page once the trial ends.

Can a static QR code still break?

Yes, if you change or delete the thing it points to. If a static QR code points to example.com/menu-spring and you delete that page or let your domain expire, the QR code still decodes the exact text, and the browser shows a 404 Not Found error.

How can I change where a static QR code goes without reprinting?

Encode a clean URL on your own domain, such as yoursite.com/qr or yoursite.com/menu, as a static QR code. Whenever you need to update the destination, change the page or add a 301 redirect on your own website host.

Do Wi-Fi and vCard QR codes expire?

Static Wi-Fi and vCard QR codes never expire and work completely offline. A Wi-Fi code only stops connecting if you change the router’s network name (SSID) or Wi-Fi password.
