How to delete photos from your iPhone and keep them in iCloud
Written for iPhone owners trying to free up storage space or clear photos off a phone without wiping their iCloud photo library
Short answer
If iCloud Photos is turned on and you tap the trash can icon inside the Apple Photos app, Apple deletes that photo from your iPhone AND from iCloud at the same time. If your goal is freeing up gigabytes on your iPhone, do not delete anything: turn on Optimize iPhone Storage instead. If your goal is removing photos from the physical iPhone while leaving them in iCloud, you must turn off 'Sync this iPhone' in Settings > iCloud > Photos first and choose 'Remove from iPhone', never the trash button in Photos.

The single most expensive misunderstanding in iOS is treating iCloud Photos like an external hard drive where you can upload photos and then delete the copies on your iPhone to free up space.
According to Apple’s iPhone User Guide, when iCloud Photos is turned on, every delete Syncs everywhere. Tap the trash icon on your iPhone, and that photo is deleted from icloud.com, your iPad and your Mac at the exact same moment.
Before you touch a single button, pick which of the three goals below you are actually trying to achieve.
The 3 different goals (and the exact setting for each)
Goal A: Reclaim iPhone storage space without losing photos in iCloud
If your iPhone says “Storage Almost Full” and you want your 80 GB photo library to take up only 8 GB on the phone while staying 100% intact in iCloud (Apple Support 105061):
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
- Keep Sync this iPhone switched ON.
- Tap Optimize iPhone Storage (so a blue checkmark appears next to it instead of Download and Keep Originals).
Your iPhone automatically replaces full-resolution local copies with tiny screen-sized thumbnails whenever you need space, while keeping every full-resolution original in iCloud. Do not delete anything inside the Photos app.
Goal B: Remove photos from the iPhone completely while keeping them in iCloud
What if you are handing a spare iPhone or iPad to a family member, travelling across a border, or simply want your cloud library off this specific device while keeping it on icloud.com and your Mac? You must disconnect iCloud Photos sync before removing anything:
- Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, tap iCloud, and tap Photos.
- Switch Sync this iPhone OFF.
- When iOS shows a prompt asking what to do with the photos currently on the phone, tap Remove Photos & Videos from iPhone (do not tap Download Photos & Videos).
- Once Sync this iPhone is off, open the Photos app: any remaining local-only photos you delete now will be deleted only from this iPhone without affecting your library on iCloud.com.
Important warning about Goal B: while Sync this iPhone is turned off, any new photos you shoot with the iPhone Camera will not upload to iCloud Photos, and as soon as you switch Sync this iPhone back on later, all your iCloud photos (including the Hidden album) will download back onto the iPhone!
Goal C: Keep private photos on your iPhone and remove them from iCloud
For most privacy-conscious users, the problem is actually the reverse: they want their everyday holiday pictures to keep syncing with iCloud Photos, while keeping specific sensitive photos off iCloud and off shared iPads/Macs, yet still accessible on their iPhone.
Because Apple Photos does not let you mark individual photos as “do not sync to iCloud”, the clean solution is moving those specific photos outside Apple Photos:
- Import the sensitive photos and videos into an on-device encrypted vault app on your iPhone (protected by its own pattern or PIN and excluded from iCloud Backup).
- Confirm the prompt to Remove from Photos (or delete those specific items inside Apple Photos).
- Open Photos > Collections > Utilities > Recently Deleted, unlock with Face ID, and tap Delete All so the copies are permanently removed from iCloud Photos and every synced iPad or Mac immediately.
Questions
What happens if I delete a photo on my iPhone while iCloud Photos is on?
According to Apple Support, iCloud Photos is a live synchronization service, not a one-way backup. Deleting a photo on your iPhone moves it to Recently Deleted across your iPhone, iCloud.com, iPad and Mac simultaneously.
How do I free up iPhone photo storage without deleting photos from iCloud?
Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and select Optimize iPhone Storage. Your iPhone keeps small screen-sized previews locally while all full-resolution originals stay safely in iCloud.
How do I delete all synced photos from my iPhone and leave them on iCloud.com?
Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, switch off Sync this iPhone, and tap Remove Photos & Videos from iPhone. Only after iCloud sync is turned off on that iPhone are the two libraries disconnected.
What if I want the opposite: keep private photos on my iPhone and delete them from iCloud?
Import the photos into an on-device encrypted vault app on your iPhone first. Once they are encrypted inside the vault, delete the originals from Apple Photos and empty Recently Deleted so they are removed from iCloud while staying safe inside your phone vault.
If I already deleted photos on my iPhone by mistake, how do I get them back in iCloud?
Within 30 days, open Photos > Collections > Utilities > Recently Deleted on your iPhone (or on iCloud.com/photos), select the photos, and tap Recover. They will return to both your iPhone and iCloud.
