How iPhone photo storage works: local, iCloud and encrypted options

Updated 4 min read

Written for iPhone owners running low on gigabytes or deciding where private photos actually live across iPhone storage and iCloud

Short answer

Every photo on an iPhone lives in one of three places: local-only system Photos storage (when iCloud Photos is off), cloud-synced iCloud Photos storage (either full-resolution originals or space-saving device thumbnails via Optimize iPhone Storage), or an app’s private encrypted sandbox. Knowing which mode your phone is using prevents two classic mistakes: deleting a photo on your iPhone without realising it deletes from iCloud too, and assuming local storage stops someone with your passcode from opening your camera roll.

Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage on almost any iPhone and Photos sits right at the top of the bar chart, often consuming 40 GB to 200 GB of flash storage. Before you start deleting videos or toggling iCloud switches to get space back, you need to know which of the three storage models your photos are currently using, because the exact same Delete button behaves completely differently depending on one setting.

The three ways photos can be stored on an iPhone

1. Local Apple Photos iCloud Photos: OFF Full-size files on iPhone Bundled into iCloud Backup Opens with iPhone passcode Uses full phone storage 2. iCloud Photos Sync iCloud Photos: ON Originals live in iCloud Optimize shrinks local cache Deleting removes everywhere Saves up to 80% phone space 3. Encrypted Vault App Outside Apple Photos Encrypted files on iPhone 0 GB used in iCloud Separate pattern or PIN key Private & isolated from cloud

Optimize iPhone Storage versus Download and Keep Originals

When Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > Sync this iPhone is switched on, Apple gives you two choices for how much local flash memory your library consumes (Apple Support 105061):

  • Optimize iPhone Storage: your iPhone keeps full-resolution photos you took recently and replaces older 12 MP / 48 MP photos and 4K videos with compact, screen-sized previews whenever internal storage gets tight. Every original byte stays untouched in iCloud, and opening or editing an older photo pulls down the full-resolution file on demand.
  • Download and Keep Originals: every single photo and video in your iCloud library is also stored at full resolution on your iPhone’s internal flash chip. Pick this if you have a 512 GB or 1 TB iPhone, edit RAW/ProRes media offline on planes, or maintain your own local Mac backups of the entire library.

Crucial warning: Optimize iPhone Storage is a caching setting, not a one-way archive. If iCloud Photos is turned on and you delete a video from the Photos app to “free up iPhone space”, Apple deletes that video from iCloud and every other Apple device too.

Privacy trade-offs of each storage option

Storage settings and privacy settings overlap in ways Apple’s menus do not always make obvious:

  1. Turning off iCloud Photos does NOT keep photos out of iCloud: according to Apple Support’s guide on what iCloud backs up, as soon as you switch iCloud Photos off, your local photo library (including the Hidden album) gets swept into your nightly iCloud Backup instead, unless you also disable Photos inside your iCloud Backup settings or turn on Advanced Data Protection. Read more in what is in an iPhone backup.
  2. Moving photos into an on-device vault shifts their storage row: when you import 5 GB of private videos into a local vault app, delete the originals from Apple Photos, and empty Recently Deleted, your Photos storage bar drops by 5 GB and the vault app’s row in iPhone Storage grows by ~5 GB, while your iCloud storage drops by 5 GB because those files are no longer sitting in the cloud.

How to free up iPhone photo storage without losing originals

Follow these steps in order to reclaim gigabytes cleanly without accidentally wiping memories from iCloud:

  1. Open Photos, scroll down to Utilities, tap Recently Deleted, unlock with Face ID, and tap Delete All to reclaim space held by already-deleted items.
  2. In that same Utilities section, tap Duplicates and use Merge to combine identical copies while keeping the highest-resolution version and metadata.
  3. Review large 4K 60fps videos under Media Types, then Videos, or check Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage, then Photos to see Review Personal Videos sorted from largest to smallest.
  4. If you use iCloud Photos and your iPhone flash chip is full, open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, and select Optimize iPhone Storage.
  5. If you want to keep private photos off iCloud completely while freeing space from your camera roll, export originals to an encrypted drive or move them into an encrypted vault, save an encrypted backup file to a computer or drive you trust, and then clear Recently Deleted.

Questions

If I turn on Optimize iPhone Storage, are my full-resolution photos lost?

No. According to Apple Support, Optimize iPhone Storage keeps your full-resolution original photos and videos in iCloud and replaces older copies on the iPhone with smaller device-sized versions whenever space runs low. Tapping a photo downloads the full original over Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Does deleting a photo on my iPhone also delete it from iCloud?

Yes, whenever iCloud Photos is turned on. Deleting an item from Apple Photos removes it from your iPhone, your iCloud library and every synced iPad or Mac at the same time.

Why is Apple Photos still using gigabytes after I deleted hundreds of videos?

Deleted photos and videos sit inside Collections > Utilities > Recently Deleted for 30 days and continue counting toward your local iPhone storage until you unlock Recently Deleted and tap Delete All.

Do hidden photos take up iPhone storage?

Yes. Moving a photo or video to the Hidden album only hides it from your main grid and widgets; the file occupies the exact same space on your iPhone and in iCloud.

Do photos inside a third-party encrypted vault count toward iCloud storage?

If the vault app stores encrypted files locally on your phone and excludes them from iCloud Backup, they use only your iPhone’s internal storage and zero gigabytes of your iCloud plan.
