Hidden photos disappeared on iPhone? How to get them back

Updated 2 min read

Written for iPhone owners whose Hidden album or hidden photos disappeared after an iOS update, settings change or phone upgrade

Short answer

When hidden photos disappear on an iPhone, they are recoverable in almost every case where the files are still inside Apple Photos: either 'Show Hidden Album' was turned off in Settings > Apps > Photos, the iOS 18+ redesign moved Hidden under Collections > Utilities, the items were deleted into Recently Deleted (where they stay for 30 days), or iCloud Photos sync is paused on Low Power Mode. The one case that requires a separate backup file is a local encrypted vault app after switching or resetting a phone.

Opening Apple Photos to look for a picture you hid months ago, and seeing either no Hidden album at all or an empty folder, is an instant stomach-drop moment.

Before you panic or reset anything, work through the five causes below in order. According to Apple Support’s missing-photos guide (104967), most “disappeared” hidden photos are still sitting on the iPhone or in iCloud behind a toggle or a 30-day trash folder.

Symptom-to-fix map for missing hidden photos

1. Whole "Hidden" Row Is Missing Settings > Apps > Photos > Show Hidden Album 100% recoverable in 5 seconds 2. Hidden Album Is Empty / Missing Items Check Utilities > Recently Deleted (30 days) Tap Select > Recover to restore 3. Missing After iOS Update / New Phone Turn on iCloud Photos & plug into power Check Shared Library filter at top right 4. Missing Inside a Third-Party Vault App Excluded from Quick Start / iCloud Backup Export backup file from old iPhone
The four places to check depending on whether the entire Hidden row disappeared or specific photos inside it are missing.

Check these 5 places in order to bring hidden photos back

Work through these five steps on your iPhone without deleting any apps along the way:

  1. Turn on Show Hidden Album: open Settings, scroll to the bottom and tap Apps, tap Photos, and switch Show Hidden Album on, then open Photos and scroll down to Collections > Utilities > Hidden.
  2. Check Recently Deleted: inside that same Utilities section in Photos, tap Recently Deleted, unlock with Face ID or your passcode, and look for your missing items; if they are there, tap Select, tap the three-dot menu, and tap Recover.
  3. Check the Library View Filter (Personal vs Shared Library): if you use iCloud Shared Photo Library, tap the filter button in the top corner of your Photos grid and select Both Libraries so items in your Personal Library are not filtered out.
  4. Check iCloud Photos sync status: open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, and verify that Sync this iPhone is switched on and stored under the right Apple Account; plug the phone into a charger on Wi-Fi if syncing was paused by Low Power Mode.
  5. Check your old iPhone or computer backup if you use a third-party vault app: if the missing photos were inside a dedicated encrypted vault app and disappeared after you upgraded phones, open the old iPhone before wiping it, save an encrypted backup file from the vault app, and restore that file on the new iPhone using your 12-word recovery phrase.

When disappeared photos CANNOT be recovered

Being direct about the two cases where recovery is impossible saves you from paying for scam “iPhone data recovery” desktop software:

  • More than 30 days after deletion from Recently Deleted (or after tapping Delete All inside Recently Deleted): once a photo is permanently purged from Recently Deleted, iOS destroys its per-file encryption key in flash storage and removes it from iCloud Photos across all synced devices (Apple Support 104967). Your only remaining hope is an older frozen computer backup or iCloud Backup snapshot created while iCloud Photos was turned off.
  • Uninstalling a local zero-knowledge vault app without a backup file: on iOS, deleting an app from your Home Screen permanently erases its sandbox container. If the app excluded its vault from iCloud Backup for privacy and you did not export an encrypted backup file first, those files cannot be recovered.

Questions

Why did my Hidden album disappear after updating to iOS 18 or later?

Apple removed the old bottom tab bar in iOS 18 and moved the Hidden album into the single-screen Collections view. Open Photos, scroll down past your photo grid to the Utilities section near the bottom, and tap Hidden.

What if Hidden is not listed under Utilities at all?

Open Settings > Apps > Photos (or Settings > Photos on iOS 17) and turn on Show Hidden Album. When that switch is off, iOS hides the Hidden row from the Photos app completely.

Where do photos go if I deleted them from the Hidden album?

Photos deleted from the Hidden album move to Collections > Utilities > Recently Deleted, where they remain recoverable for 30 days. Unlock Recently Deleted with Face ID, select the photos, and tap Recover.

Can an iOS update delete my hidden photos?

iOS updates do not delete items in your Hidden album, though after a major update iCloud Photos may re-index or pause syncing while your battery is low. Plug the iPhone into power on Wi-Fi and check the sync status at the bottom of Photos.

Why did my third-party vault app photos disappear on my new iPhone?

On-device encrypted vault apps exclude their files from iCloud and Quick Start backups for security. To move them to a new iPhone, open your old iPhone, export an encrypted backup file from the vault app, and restore it on the new phone with your recovery phrase.
