Can Apple see your hidden photos on iPhone?
Written for iPhone owners who want to know what Apple's servers can access in the Hidden album and how to switch to end-to-end or local-only encryption
Short answer
If your hidden photos stay only on your iPhone (with both iCloud Photos and iCloud Backup turned off), Apple has no copy of them. However, if iCloud Photos or iCloud Backup is turned on under Apple’s default 'Standard data protection' setting, Apple stores your photos in iCloud using encryption keys that Apple holds, meaning Apple can decrypt them for account recovery or valid legal requests. Turning on 'Advanced Data Protection' switches iCloud Photos to end-to-end encryption where only your trusted devices hold the keys.

Tapping Hide on a photo in Apple Photos puts a Face ID prompt in front of the Hidden album on your screen, which makes it easy to assume that the photo is now sealed with a personal key that even Apple cannot open.
Apple’s own security documentation (iCloud data security overview, 102651) draws a very clear distinction: hiding a photo is a user-interface filter, not a separate encryption key. Whether Apple holds the keys to decrypt your hidden photos depends entirely on your iCloud settings.
Who holds the decryption keys across the 4 iPhone setups
| Your iPhone configuration | Does a copy sit on Apple’s servers? | Who holds the decryption keys? | Can Apple decrypt the photos? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard data protection (default) with iCloud Photos ON | Yes | Apple (and your devices) | Yes (Apple Support 102651) |
| Standard data protection with iCloud Photos OFF and iCloud Backup ON | Yes (inside iCloud Backup) | Apple (and your devices) | Yes (Apple Support 108770) |
| Advanced Data Protection turned ON | Yes (ciphertext only) | Only your trusted devices | No |
On-device encrypted vault app (with isExcludedFromBackup set) | No (0 bytes in iCloud) | Only your vault pattern/PIN & recovery phrase | No |
Why Standard data protection is the default on iPhone
Every new Apple Account starts on Standard data protection (Apple Support 102651). In this mode, end-to-end encryption covers a specific list of sensitive categories (such as Passwords & Keychain, Health data, Messages in iCloud when iCloud Backup is off, and locked Notes), while iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive and iCloud Backup use server-accessible keys.
Apple keeps Standard data protection as the default so that if you lose your iPhone and forget your password, Apple Support can help you recover your account and get your family photos back. The downside is that your Hidden album sits in that exact same server-accessible iCloud Photos bucket:
- If a court serves Apple with a valid warrant or subpoena for your iCloud account under Standard data protection, Apple has the technical keys to provide your iCloud Photos and iCloud Backups.
- If an attacker compromises your Apple Account credentials and passes two-factor verification (or accesses
icloud.com/photoswhen web access is enabled), your Hidden album is in that library.
How to make sure Apple does not hold the keys to your photos
You can close the server-key gap in two ways, and you can use both together:
- Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, tap iCloud, scroll to the bottom, tap Advanced Data Protection, set up a Recovery Contact or 28-character Recovery Key, and turn Advanced Data Protection on (where available in your country).
- On that same iCloud settings screen, switch off Access iCloud Data on the Web unless you regularly log into iCloud.com from a browser.
- For photos that should never leave your phone or share your iPhone passcode even across your own trusted Apple devices, import them into an on-device encrypted vault app, confirm Remove from Photos, and empty Photos > Utilities > Recently Deleted.
Note for readers in the United Kingdom: Apple Support documents in HT122234 that Advanced Data Protection is not available to new users in the UK, making an on-device encrypted vault outside iCloud Photos especially important if you want end-to-end key control. Questions
Does hiding a photo in Apple Photos encrypt it differently from normal photos?
No. In Apple Photos, hiding an item sets a visibility flag so it moves to Utilities > Hidden behind Face ID or your passcode. It uses the exact same storage and iCloud encryption tier as the rest of your photo library.
Can Apple see my iCloud Photos by default?
Under Apple’s default Standard data protection setting, iCloud Photos and iCloud Backup are encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers using keys that Apple controls. Apple can access those files when required by law or when helping you recover your account.
Does turning on Advanced Data Protection make Hidden photos end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. According to Apple Support’s iCloud data security overview, turning on Advanced Data Protection moves iCloud Photos and iCloud Backup to end-to-end encryption so only your trusted devices hold the decryption keys.
Is Advanced Data Protection available in every country?
In most regions yes, with a notable exception: Apple Support documents that Advanced Data Protection is no longer available to new users in the United Kingdom.
If I turn off iCloud Photos, does Apple still get a copy of my Hidden album?
Yes, if iCloud Backup is still turned on! When iCloud Photos is off, your local photo library (including the Hidden album) is included inside your nightly iCloud Backup instead.

Are iCloud Photos encrypted?
Yes, but by default Apple holds the keys. Advanced Data Protection makes Photos end-to-end encrypted, with a few exceptions.
GuideDo hidden photos go to iCloud?
Yes. With iCloud Photos on, a hidden photo syncs like any other and shows up in the Hidden album on your other devices.
GuideCan anyone see your hidden photos on iCloud?
Family Sharing storage plans do not expose your Hidden album, while a shared iPad, Mac or iCloud Shared Library can. Here is who sees what.
