AlbumVault vs Obscura (2026 Review & Comparison)

Updated 2 min read

Written for iPhone and Android users comparing zero-knowledge encrypted photo vaults that require no account and collect no data

The short version

Obscura: Encrypted Photo Vault (by Orlio Inc) is a serious, no-account iOS vault that names AES-256-GCM encryption, states its encryption code is open source, and reports Data Not Collected on the App Store. Its biggest trade-off is recovery and platform support: Obscura is iPhone-only and explicitly has no password reset or recovery phrase, so forgetting your password loses the vault permanently.

AlbumVault Each vault has its own 12-word recovery phrase (BIP-39), shown once. We never see it and cannot reset it. If you forget your pattern, the phrase gets you back in. AlbumVault is built for iPhone and Android. Move a vault between them with an encrypted transfer file and its recovery phrase.

Most photo vault comparisons pit a real encrypted app against an ad-heavy folder hider. Obscura: Encrypted Photo Vault (published by Orlio Inc on the US App Store) is different: like AlbumVault, it is built around genuine on-device encryption, zero user accounts, and a Data Not Collected App Store privacy label.

Here is our full review of Obscura and a fair look at where Obscura and AlbumVault make different design choices.

Obscura Photo Vault review: what it gets right

Checked on the US App Store on 26 October 2026, Obscura stands out immediately from legacy vault apps in four ways:

  • Named authenticated encryption (AES-256-GCM): instead of vague claims, Obscura’s listing names AES-256-GCM directly and states that the code that encrypts your files is open source so outsiders can inspect it.
  • No accounts, no cloud: there is no email sign-up, no remote account server and no telemetry funnel on first launch.
  • Data Not Collected on the App Store: Orlio Inc declares zero data collection on Apple’s App Privacy nutrition label.
  • One-time purchase option: alongside monthly ($6.99) and yearly ($29.99) subscriptions, Obscura offers a $39.99 one-time Pro unlock.
Obscura: Encrypted Photo Vault AES-256-GCM · Data Not Collected Encryption code published open source No recovery phrase if password forgotten iOS only · $6.99/mo, $29.99/yr, $39.99 AlbumVault AES-256-GCM · Zero third-party SDKs 5×5 pattern grid + Secure Enclave binding 12-word BIP-39 recovery phrase per vault iOS & Android · $19.99/yr or $39.99
Both apps reject accounts and ad trackers; they differ on password recovery, pattern unlock and Android cross-platform support.

Where Obscura and AlbumVault differ

1. What happens when you forget your password or pattern

Obscura makes a strict architectural choice on its App Store page: “There is no password reset, by design: we keep no copy of your password or key.” If you forget your password after six months of using Face ID, there is no spare key and no recovery path.

AlbumVault solves the zero-knowledge recovery problem without a server: Each vault has its own 12-word recovery phrase (BIP-39), shown once. We never see it and cannot reset it. If you forget your pattern, the phrase gets you back in. When you create a vault, you write the phrase down and the app checks it by asking for 3 of the words.

2. Unlock method and multiple vaults

Obscura centers on a password/PIN lock with biometric convenience.

AlbumVault Unlock by drawing a pattern on a 5×5 grid of dots, using at least 6 dots. Prefer numbers? A PIN of 6 to 12 digits works too. Every pattern or PIN leads to exactly one vault, and a vault can have more than one way in. A pattern that belongs to no vault opens nothing. A guest vault (Pro) is a second pattern that opens a separate vault with only what you put there. Draw your emergency pattern and AlbumVault opens your chosen vault and permanently removes access to every other vault on this phone, with no prompt. It needs a second vault, which is part of Pro.

3. Switching phones and Android support

Obscura is built for iOS only.

AlbumVault AlbumVault is built for iPhone and Android. Move a vault between them with an encrypted transfer file and its recovery phrase. Save an encrypted backup file of a vault to Files, a computer or a drive you trust. Only its 12-word recovery phrase opens it. The hardware key cannot move to a new phone, so on a new phone, or a phone restored from a backup, a vault opens only with its recovery phrase. Keep the phrase safe before you switch phones.

4. Pricing comparison

On the US App Store on 26 October 2026:

  • Obscura Pro: $6.99/month, $29.99/year, or $39.99 one-time purchase.
  • AlbumVault: Free: 1 vault, up to 100 photos and 10 videos, encrypted backup file included. Pro: as many vaults as you want, including the guest vault, with no limit on photos and videos.

Which one should you choose?

Pick Obscura if:

  1. You only use an iPhone and never plan to move a vault to Android.
  2. You specifically want an app whose developer publishes its file-encryption module as open source.
  3. You are comfortable with having zero recovery option if you ever forget your password.

Pick AlbumVault if:

  1. You want a 12-word recovery phrase per vault so a forgotten pattern or broken phone does not mean losing your photos forever.
  2. You prefer drawing a pattern on a 5×5 grid where each pattern opens a separate vault (including a guest vault and an emergency pattern).
  3. You want portable encrypted backup files that restore across both iPhone and Android, or a lower annual plan ($19.99/year vs $29.99/year).

Limits to know on the AlbumVault side

AlbumVault does not hide that some private data exists: your phone’s storage settings, and a forensic examiner, can still show that. Deleting is not shredding: a lab that images the phone may recover deleted bytes. Use AlbumVault to keep people out of your photos, not to beat a forensics lab.

The hardware key cannot move to a new phone, so on a new phone, or a phone restored from a backup, a vault opens only with its recovery phrase. Keep the phrase safe before you switch phones.

AlbumVault cannot protect against malware or a jailbroken or rooted phone running code while the vault is open, against what is on screen or shared out once decrypted, or against someone deleting files they can reach (they can destroy data, not read it).

Questions

Is Obscura Photo Vault actually encrypted?

Yes. According to its US App Store listing, Obscura encrypts photos and videos with AES-256-GCM on your device, requires no account or cloud, and states that the code that encrypts your files is open source. AlbumVault: Files are encrypted in 1 MB pieces with AES-256-GCM; each file gets its own key, and every piece is checked so a changed or reordered piece is refused. Your pattern or PIN is stretched with PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA512 (600,000 rounds) and combined with a key held in your phone’s Secure Enclave (iPhone) or StrongBox/TEE (Android), so it can only be tried on your phone.

What happens if I forget my Obscura password?

Obscura’s App Store description states: 'There is no password reset, by design: we keep no copy of your password or key.' If you forget your password, the files cannot be recovered. AlbumVault: Each vault has its own 12-word recovery phrase (BIP-39), shown once. We never see it and cannot reset it. If you forget your pattern, the phrase gets you back in.

Does Obscura collect any personal data?

No. On the US App Store (checked 26 October 2026), Orlio Inc reports Data Not Collected for Obscura. AlbumVault: The apps contain no analytics, ad or tracking SDKs. Purchases use Apple’s or Google’s own in-app purchase.

Does Obscura work on Android?

No, Obscura is published for iOS only. AlbumVault: AlbumVault is built for iPhone and Android. Move a vault between them with an encrypted transfer file and its recovery phrase.

How much does Obscura Pro cost compared with AlbumVault?

On the US App Store on 26 October 2026, Obscura listed Obscura Pro Monthly at $6.99, Obscura Pro Yearly at $29.99, and Obscura Pro at $39.99. AlbumVault: Free: 1 vault, up to 100 photos and 10 videos, encrypted backup file included. Pro: as many vaults as you want, including the guest vault, with no limit on photos and videos.
